Data Engineer
Remote · Lakehouse and analytics on AWS · Senior individual contributor
About the role
binbash is an AWS Advanced Tier Services Partner. Our data practice builds the lakehouses underneath our clients’ analytics and, increasingly, underneath their AI — ingestion, modelling, and tables a business can query without filing a ticket.
You would join it as a senior individual contributor, owning pipelines end to end for a portfolio of startup clients rather than one internal warehouse. The work is closer to platform engineering than to reporting: if a table is slow, wrong or expensive, it is yours to fix.
Requirements / Technical Skills
- Strong SQL and Python, and comfort reading and writing infrastructure as code (Terraform)
- AWS Glue and PySpark for ingestion and transformation at a size that no longer fits in memory
- Amazon Athena and Amazon Redshift, and the judgement about which query belongs in which
- An open table format — Apache Hudi, Iceberg or Delta — and what its compaction and small-file behaviour actually costs
- dbt for modelling, with tests and documentation treated as part of the model rather than a follow-up
- AWS Lake Formation, or an equivalent grasp of how access to a lake is governed
- Pipeline orchestration and failure handling (AWS Step Functions, Airflow or similar)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English)
- Enthusiasm for working in a startup environment and the ability to be cross-functional
Key Responsibilities
- Build and operate ingestion from the sources a startup actually has — application databases, event streams, third-party APIs
- Model the raw, curated and serving layers, and keep the boundary between them honest
- Own data quality and lineage: the tests that fail loudly before a dashboard quietly goes wrong
- Tune partitioning, file layout and query cost, and be able to show what each change bought
- Hand the result to analysts and to our AI/ML practice in a shape they can use without a translator
Where you are based
Fully remote, as we have been since binbash was founded. We would prefer Argentina, Uruguay or Colombia, because that is where most of the team already sits and it keeps us in one working day — but it is a preference and not a filter: make the case for where you are.
Availability to travel is a strong plus rather than a requirement — team gatherings, and the AWS events we run and attend.
